“Whoops” – Tiger Woods trolls Phil Mickelson after winning PGA Tour’s PIP initiative

Veteran golfer Tiger Woods has won the first Player Impact Program (PIP), a system put in place in 2021 by PGA Tour to reward players for their social and fan engagement. Notably, all this was regardless of how they performed on the course.

Woods beat eight-time Majors champion Phil Mickelson to claim the $8 million first prize, with the top 10 players getting payments from the $40 million fund, the PGA Tour confirmed. Meanwhile, the California native took to his social media handle on Wednesday to rub it in a little.

In December, Mickelson announced that he’d won the PIP, tweeting, “I’d like to thank all the crazies (and real supporters too) for…………………

“To get the 2nd half of the money I have to add an event I haven’t played in a while. See you in Kapalua

“P.S. I’ll try and find another hot controversial topic soon.”

After the results were revealed, Tiger took to Twitter, re-tweeting Mickelson saying, “Whoops.’’

The metrics to determine the winner used five criteria — Nielsen ratings, Google searches, MVP Index, Meltwater Mentions and Q-Rating, based on a player’s appeal and popularity on social media.

After Woods and Mickelson came Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, each of whom were awarded $3.5 million, and then Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, world No. 1 Jon Rahm and Bubba Watson, who each cashed $3 million.

“You look at the 10 guys that are on there, and they’re the 10 guys that have been at the top of the game or have been around the top of the game for a long time,” McIlroy said Wednesday. “It’s certainly not something that I’m checking up on every week to see where I’m at, but I think it went the way most of us expected it to go.”
