This year, Novak Djokovic failed to win a Grand Slam in the entire season for the first time since 2017. The Serbian has underperformed on the court and many pundits have written off from winning a major title next year.

However, his former coach Goran Ivanisevic is optimistic that the 37-year-old can still win the Grand Slam in 2025. Djokovic won three of the four Majors last year and finished the year as World No. 1. However, this season, he has struggled to replicate those performances.

Djokovic began the year by making a semifinal exit at the Australian Open, which he has won 10 times in his career. At the French Open, he suffered a knee injury that forced him to withdraw. He fought hard to reach the Wimbledon final, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz for the second straight year.

The 37-year-old failed to reach the second week of the US Open despite being among the favorites to win the title. He exited the tournament in the third round after a shock defeat to Alexei Popyrin. The World No. 5’s failure to win a Grand Slam this year has seen several pundits write him off heading into the 2025 season, something Ivanisevic disagreed with.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are convincingly above the rest of the field, but I put Novak in the group with them, because when Novak really wants to play, he is still the best in the world, in my opinion. The other thing is how much he wants to play and when – we saw at the Olympics. If he goes out on the court like that, then he can still win a Slam.

Meanwhile, Djokovic and Ivanisevic enjoyed a fruitful relationship for six years. He helped the Serbian win 12 of his 24 Grand Slams before they parted ways in March 2024.

Goran Ivanisevic wary of several factors that can limit Novak Djokovic’s chances of winning a major title

Novak Djokovic took part in just nine tournaments this season. Despite winning the Paris Masters last year, he withdrew from the event this season, weeks after finishing as runner-up at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

Djokovic is currently ranked World No. 4 but is projected to drop further if he continues to skip tournaments next season. This has led Goran Ivanisevic to express worry that his ranking could hurt his chances of winning a Grand Slam in 2025.

It depends on his ranking and the draw, when does he need to face Sinner or Alcaraz, lots of factors, but can Novak do it? Yes, he can. You can never write him off, I would never do that. And good for me – I won’t have to root against Novak, I can stay his fan, unless he switches to women’s tennis!

Goran Ivanisevic stated

Djokovic has already admitted that he is focused on playing in Grand Slam events and representing his country at international level. He has even withdrawn from the ATP Finals despite being ranked sixth in the Live Race.
