Over the years, the topic of performance-enhancing drug use has been one of the most discussed issues within the combat sports community. Recently, two leading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experts, Gordon Ryan and Mikey Musumeci, engaged in a conversation about this subject. This has resulted in both having a heated exchange online.

Grappling sensation Mikey Musumeci made waves in the combat sports community by signing a landmark deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Musumeci hopes that the UFC will bring “stability” and “ethics” to the sport. Along with that, ‘Darth Rigatoni’ also believes that it would help clean up the competition, which has remains plagued by issues related to performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

There’s a lot of horrible ethics, morals, and I hope now that with the UFC we can change that and make it a professional sport. Because it hasn’t been a professional sport, jiu-jitsu, with people they blatantly use [steroids]. They’re not athletes. They really don’t have the values of martial artists.

Ryan took to Instagram to deliver a sharp critique of ‘Darth Rigatoni’. He questioned Musumeci’s moral stance and perpetually melancholic demeanor. Ryan suggested that beneath this facade lies the deep-seated anxiety of Musumeci about the possibility of losing in prestigious competitions like the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC).

…Get of your moral high ground, dork. This guys is talking about cheating. Steroids are legal in every competition minus specific IBJJF competitions since 2019. It’s not cheating. All I hear is an excuse for why you could never do what others, specifically I have done…

Musumeci’s signing with the UFC is anticipated to signal the start of numerous high-profile collaborations. As such, the promotion seeks to dominate the jiu-jitsu scene. Darth Rigatoni made his debut under the UFC banner and faced the seasoned veteran Felipe Machado. In his headliner match at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 9, Musumeci won comfortably via unanimous decision against Machado.

Gordon Ryan explains the beef between him and Mikey Musumeci

Mikey Musumeci and Gordon Ryan are two of the most prominent figures in BJJ. However, they don’t get along. Ryan, who is widely regarded as the best no-gi grappler of all time, tends to have conflicts with many people. So, this behavior is not unusual. In contrast, Musumeci is generally more mild-mannered.

Despite being separated by approximately 100 pounds and never having faced each other in competition, the rivalry between Musumeci and Ryan seems to transcend typical reasons for conflict. Darth Rigatoni has criticized “King Gordon” in the past, particularly regarding his alleged use of steroids. However, Ryan remains unfazed by the trash talk directed towards him.

Mikey just attacked me. The only thing I’ve ever done is talk highly of Mikey. The thing about Mikey is Mikey will be like, ‘If you do steroids …’ Mikey has been taking passive-aggressive shots at me forever…

Musumeci likely has more pressing concerns than his rivalry with “King” Gordon. Last month, he was stripped of his One Championship Flyweight grappling belt after failing to make weight due to a sudden 35-pound weight class change.

In his efforts to meet the weight requirement, he was hospitalized with a serious condition. On the other hand, Ryan recently achieved victory in his Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) super fight matches back in August. However, because of ongoing health issues, his future match schedule remains uncertain.
