Government not allowing tennis players to enter the country in December, red-flag for Australian Open 2021?
Few years down the line, 2020 is going to be looked upon as the most unpredictable year the world ever experienced in terms of all the forces that exist in nature. The year was hit by challenges that seemed beyond our imagination to overcome, however, the world today is standing at a much better place although some would say otherwise.
Sporting bodies responsible for conducting events are facing the toughest time before arriving at a concrete decision about matters and Tennis Australia is facing a similar situation regarding the upcoming events to be held in Australia at the start of next year.
Events prior to the Australian Open in jeopardy
Big news was out yesterday on the Tennis Channel during a discussion with tennis enthusiasts, Paul Annacone and Jim Courier.
CEO of Tennis Australia, Mr. Craig Tiley gave the word out that the Victorian government is not allowing players to quarantine in the country during the month of December. This decision naturally puts the events leading up to the first Grand Slam in jeopardy.
The average rate of infection in Melbourne for the last 14-18 days has been zero however, the government is being as precautious as possible in order to not jeopardize that.
Former coach of Roger Federer, Paul Annacone said, “The government is working with Tennis Australia to figure what can be done when, why and how. When the government’s involved, you sit back and work with them which is exactly what tennis Australia is trying to do.“
The decision over the quarantine location and period for the players had already been changed twice before arriving to the most recent one which stirs an air of doubt over the events prior to the Australian Open.
Jim Courier, former World No. 1 in tennis and now a commentator, spoke about being empathetic towards Tennis Australia who are working day and night during these difficult times.
“Lot of things up in the air again for Tennis Australia and they should be spared as their team is working without any sleep to arrive at a conclusion,” Jim said.
As is stands, Tennis Australia is still finding a way for a better experience for the fans as they plan to follow the rules of the government as well.
The Australian Open 2021 will take place in Melbourne from the 18-31 January, 2021.
