Chicago Cubs pitcher Colten Brewer broke his hand after punching the dugout wall at Wrigley Field. Following medical care, he was listed in IL for 60 days. The incident took place in Saturday’s game, where the team lost 7-0 against the Los Angeles Angels.

A frustrated Brewer took out his anger of giving up three runs in the third inning by breaking his non-pitching hand. Regardless, the pitcher won’t be playing any further games until he recovers. “Emotions get the best of us sometimes,” Brewer said of his actions.

When those things happen, you know you screwed up. That was the conversation. Then there’s consequences for the mistakes you make.

Former MLB player Jason Kipnis later commented on this incident on Foul Territory saying, “It’s a business savvy move if you ask me.” He later recalled how he himself once broke a figure, emphasizing that it was “not bad enough to go on the IL.”

Counsell further added, “It’s an unfortunate mistake,” that Colten Brewer let his emotions get the best of him. His actions in a moment of frustration led him to get placed on IL with the pitcher missing quite a number of games. However, Counsell believes that’s not the type of person Brewer is, “but it’s a mistake that he made.”

On Saturday’s game, Brewer gave up two hits, two walks, and one hit batter with three runs on the go. Los Angeles Angels later took advantage of the Cubs’ errors to win the game by a 7-0 margin. Brewer commented on the incident prior to Sunday’s game, saying,

My intention wasn’t to break my hand. I’ll get frustrated and make mistakes. That’s no excuse. There’s a lot I can prove out there, that I’m willing not to do stuff like that.
