Defending champions Italy were knocked out of the 2024 Euro following an intense clash with Switzerland. The side led by Granit Xhaka gave the men in blue no chance as they completely dominated their opposition, both on and off the ball. Two goals, scored in the space of just nine minutes proved to be the undoing of an unconvincing Italian side.
At the heart of the Swiss attack was none other than former Arsenal man Granit Xhaka. The 31-year-old was pulling the strings as Switzerland ran rings around an Italian midfield consisting of Nicolo Barella, Nicolo Fagioli and Bryan Cristante. A quick look at the numbers reveal that Switzerland enjoyed the greater share of the ball in almost every attacking metric.
After an unbelievable season with Bayer Leverkusen, Xhaka is in no mood to slow down. It will be one of the biggest achievements in the entire sport if he is to follow up an unbeaten season in the Bundesliga with a UEFA Euro triumph come July 15th.
Switzerland will face the winners of England vs Slovakia, set to take place on the 30th of July.
Fans react to Granit Xhaka’s unbelievable season
Granit Xhaka was an irreplaceable element of Xabi Alonso‘s Bayer Leverkusen last season. The Swiss midfielder claimed both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal as he narrowly missed out on the Europa League title. As his unbelievable form continues at Euros, fans were at a loss for adjectives to describe his brilliance on the pitch.
A fan claimed that Xhaka has had one of the best seasons ever for a midfielder in recent times. Another added that Xhaka became the latest player to break free of the ‘Arsenal curse’. The Gunners were subject to a lot of trolls, with many pointing out that success is guaranteed if one leaves Arsenal. Followers were quick to name him the best midfielder at the 2024 Euros.
As Ruben Vargas picked up the Player Of The Match award, many argued that Xhaka was more deserving of the same. Xhaka also had the most touches and key passes made during the game. Fans regretted not appreciating him enough when the player consistently delivered for Arsenal in midfield during his Premier League days.
