Despite Team USA breezing through their games at the 2024 Paris Olympics with relative ease, there has been an outcry from some over the team selection, particularly due to the omission of NBA stars like Jaylen Brown from the final roster. However, USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill has now broken his silence to explain his choices and respond to the criticisms.

Hill appeared recently on All The Smoke Productions, where he was interviewed on his decision-making process ahead of the 2024 Olympics. When the basketball Hall of Famer was asked what he thought about Jaylen Brown questioning his judgement, he said:

Well, first of all, when you have a team with the profile of players on this team, you know there's gonna be controversy... I'm a fan of these guys that are playing in the current era. It was disappointing, but you got to do your job... When we first put out the roster before it was announced… I called Paul George, I called Damian Lillard, I called Jaylen Brown, I felt like they were of a certain stature, where they deserved to hear it before it was made public.

Hill acknowledged that it’s never easy for a player hoping to compete in the Olympics to be left off the roster. However, he emphasized that his job has to be done, no matter how difficult it is or which player was not selected. Hill also noted that he has always strived to be transparent, as demonstrated by personally reaching out to several players when the team roster was first finalized.

As for Brown making Team USA for the 2028 Olympics, Hill stated that it would be up to Brown if he wants to, dismissing the outcry over his omission this year as just noise. The 51-year-old also expressed confidence that he and Brown will have a conversation and reach an understanding in due time.

Jaylen Brown responds to Grant Hill over ‘conspiracy’ remark

After being passed over for Team USA selection, Brown expressed concerns about the entire process and voiced his thoughts. However, Hill wasn’t pleased and later dismissed Brown’s claims as a ‘conspiracy theory’ during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show.

Nevertheless, that was a phrase that did not sit well with the Boston Celtics star either. The 27-year-old then took to X (formerly Twitter) to hit back at the USA Basketball executive.

With both fans and basketball analysts shocked at Brown not making the team, the criticisms against Hill soon spread like wildfire. Nonetheless, some notable stars from the Celtics, such as Jayson Tatum and Derrick White, still made the final roster to represent the country on the global stage in Paris.
