Novak Djokovic secured his first title of the year by beating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In the battle for gold, the two rivals played each other for the seventh time in their careers.

The Summer Games were the main priority for Djokovic, who spoke about it all year. He had not won any tournament heading into the event and hoped to win a maiden tennis gold for Serbia this year. Having recently undergone knee surgery, he played with the gray band around it at Wimbledon and in Paris.

This did not stop the 37-year-old from cruising past the initial rounds. He struggled to put off Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinal due to his knee, which looked to have caused some trouble in the match. However, he soon bounced back in the semifinal to secure a chance to fight for gold.

With the same intent, Djokovic brought the fight to Alcaraz. The Spaniard was the favorite heading into the match, but surprisingly it was the 24-time Grand Slam champion who pushed the youngster to his very limit to win the match 7-6(3), 7-6(2).

After the win, he expressed satisfaction with completing the ‘puzzle’ by winning the Olympic gold.

That’s one of the biggest internal battles I keep on fighting with myself. That I feel like I haven’t done enough or been enough in my life on and off the court. So it’s a big lesson for me. I’m super grateful for the blessing to win a historic gold medal for my country. To complete the golden slam. To complete all the records. Yes it [the puzzle] is [complete], it is.

With that win, he achieved the biggest win of his career and won the elusive gold for Serbia.

Novak Djokovic looks forward to the next 48 hours after maiden Olympic gold win

The celebrations have started for Novak Djokovic, who secured a maiden gold medal at the Paris Olympics. He ended his title drought this year with a win over Carlos Alcaraz. The Serbian had hoped for this all year and manifested that dream into a victory.

Winning Davis Cup and particularly a golden medal at age 37 for Serbia is unprecedented. I’m just starting my celebration. I can’t wait for what’s coming up in the next 48 hours.

At the age of 37, the Serbian is still beating youngsters in a great fashion. While players from his era are slowly drifting into retirement, he continues to go strong and challenges the newer generations for all the big titles.

Winning the singles gold has made Djokovic only the third male tennis player to win a career Golden Slam (winning all four Grand Slams and a singles Olympic gold), after Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi.
