Things got heated in Paris when Great Britain’s George Mills confronted France’s Hugo Hay after a massive collision in the 5000m heat. Despite the tempers flaring, after a detailed investigation, the three athletes including Mills who came a cropper were reinstated.

Hugo Hay remained upright while George Mills tumbled en route to home straight on the final lap and in the process took down three other runners with himself. However, both men had made it to the finish line, Mills and Hay made no attempt to keep it under wraps and went into a rift that featured heated words alongside a bit of physical contact as well.

I think it’s pretty clear. I got stepped out on as I was about to kick in the home straight and boom, the French lad took me down. From my perspective that was the perfect qualifier for me, going through first 2k in six minutes. I was like: ‘Nobody in this field can run away from me at this pace’, so I was just sitting, waiting, biding my time, gonna kick off the home straight then bang, hit the deck. What can you do?
George Mills said after the race before he knew about his reinstatement

Even though when Mills, who is the son of former England fullback Danny Mills, was asked what was it that he said to Hay, denied to answer, as per the sources, he asked the French runner to ‘f*ck off’. The other fallers in the 5000m heat of the Paris Olympics who were also reinstated in the race featured the likes of Dominic Lokinyomo (Refugee Olympics team), Mike Foppen (Netherlands) and Thierry Ndikumwenayo (Spain).

How did the madness in the 5000m heat in Paris Olympics unfold?

Surprisingly it was a two-stretch race, the first one obviously featuring the controversial falls. However, that wasn’t the end of the drama that was in store for the world. The second heat that was held saw a cameraman accidentally walking onto the track, disrupting the runners’ momentum.

Even though most of the runners made their way to the finish line without much of a hassle, America’s Abdihamid Nur, a medal contender, tumbled and finished last.

Despite all the frenzy, if there was one thing that remained constant that was Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the two-time world champion from Norway qualifying first as he finished the race in just 13 minutes, 51.59 seconds, a redemption arc that would boost his morale after he failed to grab a podium finish in the 1500m.
