Novak Djokovic will be looking to make history by winning an elusive 25th Grand Slam singles title this season. However, his chances of achieving that seem limited by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance on the men’s tour. Nevertheless, former British No.1 Greg Rusedski believes he can still win a major title.
There have been eight Grand Slam tournaments since Djokovic won his 24th major title at the US Open after beating Daniil Medvedev. Since then, he has lost to either Alcaraz or Sinner five times. Also, in 2025, he failed to reach a major event final, crashing out in the semi-finals of all four Slams.
However, Djokovic is regarded as one of the greatest players to ever grace the court, having won the most Slams in the men’s circuit, but has the same number of major titles as WTA legend Margaret Court. Should he win his 25th title, he will become the undisputed greatest player in the sport.
But to achieve that, he has to compete against Alcaraz and Sinner, who are currently hungry for major crowns. The duo has won at least two Grand Slams each season in the past two years. No other player has come close to challenging them at the events, as they continue to produce excellent performances.
Notwithstanding, Djokovic has won ten Australian Open and seven Wimbledon Championships in his career. In both tournaments, the 38-year-old has produced his most impressive displays, which Rusedski believes could help him win Wimbledon this season. He revealed during the Off Court with Greg podcast that Djokovic still has what it takes to win a Slam:
I think for Novak, if he is going to win a 25th major, it’s most likely going to be Wimbledon. I still think he believes that he can win a major, but for him, the key is by the time he gets to the semis meeting either Carlos or Jannik, he has to save as much energy as humanly possible. Or has got to hope one of them drops out of the draw, and doesn’t have to beat them back-to-back. I think he can beat one of them on any given day, and that is the big question.
A few days ago, Djokovic withdrew from the Adelaide International, which was meant to be his warm-up tournament ahead of the Australian Open. The former World No. 1’s withdrawal comes a day after he announced that he was no longer involved in the affairs of the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), which he co-founded.
Greg Rusedski says Novak Djokovic is his greatest tennis player
For the past three years, there has been a heated debate over who is the greatest tennis player in men’s tennis. Fans have been divided between Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. However, many believe that since Djokovic has won the highest number of Grand Slams (24), he’s meant to take the position of the GOAT.

During the aforementioned conversation, Greg Rusedski said that he has nothing but respect for Djokovic as he continues to compete on the court despite his age. The former World No.4 added that Djokovic is his tennis GOAT:
It’s a big ask, but don’t ever discount a great champion, he is willing to try new things, willing to keep pushing. I have nothing but respect. For him, the ultimate dream would be to win number 25, but even if he doesn’t, for me, he’s still the G.O.A.T. Great to have him in the game, and may he continue for as long as he wants.
Federer and Nadal retired from the circuit in 2022 and 2024, respectively, while Djokovic is yet to talk about retirement. He has declared that he intends to play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Should he play at the event, he will be 41 and perhaps among the oldest players in the men’s circuit.
