In a statement released later on, the Guardians apologized to Duran and his team. The franchise also expressed that they were working with the MLB to work on the next steps on this while identifying the incident.

We are aware of the situation that took place during today’s game between a fan and one of the Red Sox players that violated our fan conduct policy. We recognize the gravity of the behavior at issue here and take very seriously conduct of this nature. We apologize to the Red Sox organization, the player involved, fans in the area and are addressing the situation.

Cleveland Guardians said in a statement

Duran ended that day with 4 hits from his 6 at-bats. The Red Sox ended up as 13-3 winners from this game and won the series 2-1.

The Red Sox outfielder was later held back by his teammates and stopped from going up against the fan who heckled him over his mental health issues. While speaking to the media after the game, the 28-year-old thanked the support staff for their help in this matter.

The fans just said something inappropriate. I’m just happy that the security handled it and the umpires were aware of it and they took care of it for me. When you open yourself up like that, you also open yourself up to the enemies.
