“Didn’t allow me to show the best,” Current WWE Champion alludes to lackluster booking of his title reign as he hits the 200-day mark

In his first reign as the World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther hasn't even come remotely close to mirroring his previous exploits.

The Paul Levesque era of WWE has witnessed a plethora of memorable moments. Most of them stemmed from the culmination of several stories leading to title changes, thus pleasing the fans. However, Triple H‘s regime has fallen flat in capitalizing on most of those reigns. A prime example of which is Gunther‘s ongoing run with the World Heavyweight Championship.

On Wednesday, he clocked 200 days with gold around his waist. However, having done some retrospection on how things have unfolded over the past few months, Gunther is admittedly disappointed. Speaking to Daily Mail, the Austrian dissected why it didn’t feel ideal to him. The 37-year-old lamented losing to Cody Rhodes at Crown Jewel.

Shortly after that, The Ring General had to revisit his feud with Damian Priest, which didn’t have its closure until Saturday Night’s Main Event in mid-December. Even though the two men at loggerheads gave their all, the fans had already seen enough of them. It was one of those rare phases in Gunther’s main roster journey where he felt like the underdog.

His self-confidence reached its nadir, and Priest kept harnessing that aspect way beyond everyone’s liking. As a result, the reigning world champ seemed like a fish out of water and wasn’t even his own self anymore. But with 2.5 months into 2025, he’s showing glimpses of a cocky heel who’s pompous but incredibly confident about his abilities.

He’s on course to battle Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41. The online reception to this as one of the world title matches at WWE’s biggest show of the year has been absolutely underwhelming. The netizens have voiced their displeasure, but the arena crowds continue to be aboard the Uso hype train.

Gunther admits to not interested in Jey Uso as his WrestleMania opponent

In the same interview from above, Gunther reflected on Jey Uso being his WrestleMania opponent this year. For what it’s worth, the Imperium boss isn’t interested in doing that dance once again.

They’ve wrestled each other on a number of occasions, with their latest meeting coming exactly a week before Jey won the Royal Rumble match. The erstwhile Walter was hoping to cross paths with some of the remaining top-level names on the roster whom he feels are a step ahead of him.

He’s set for a couple of big-time encounters against Seth Rollins and CM Punk next month in Europe. However, they’d be non-televised bouts. A bunch of fans firmly believe that either Seth or Punk would’ve made a more compelling case for Gunther’s Mania title defense than The Yeet Master.
