Gunther Chokes-out Jey Uso to Become the New World Heavyweight Champion on Raw
Burying the ghosts of WrestleMania, Gunther dispatched a less-than-100% Jey Uso on Raw to become a two-time world champion.

In a massive rematch from WrestleMania 41 for the World Heavyweight Championship, the champ, Jey Uso, defended the title against Gunther in the main event of this week’s Raw. Back in April at The Show of Shows, The Yeet Master stunned the Austrian to snap his 259-day reign with the coveted belt. Uso made his foe tap out in an extremely rare sight.
Having vowed to repeat those exploits last night, Uso couldn’t quite get the job done. Gunther had identified the Achilles’ heel in Uso early into the match. The former Bloodline member was competing with a strapped abdomen, indicating that he was way short of his physical best. The Ring General worked upon Uso’s weakness and was able to put him to sleep after repeated attempts of the chokehold.
While Uso did hit the Vienna-born wrestler with his best shot, the latter had it scouted. At last, Gunther locked the former Right Hand Man in his submission maneuver in the middle of that logo-infested Raw ring. And just like that, the WWE Universe got a new world champion. Notably, there was no cash in attempt from Seth Rollins during the course of that showdown.

But with Gunther now being a two-time world champ, he’d have to be wary of The Visionary and his recruits—Bron Breakker and “Big” Bronson Reed. The majority of fans were miffed with Gunther’s initial world title reign, which, in their opinion, was devoid of The Ring General locking horns with top-tier talent on the WWE roster. The Triple H-led creative team has to get it right with the 37-year-old this time around.
How did Jey Uso react to his tough loss against Gunther?
Despite having lost the world title to Gunther on Raw, Jey Uso didn’t crash out. In fact, after the show went off air, the former Bloodline member apologized to the fans in attendance and to his younger son, Jeyce. Addressing the man to whom he’d just succumbed, Uso gave Gunther his flowers and called him one of the best pros in the business.

The Yeet Master claimed that he does respect The Ring General a lot. Uso also took a moment to appreciate the Phoenix crowd that was vociferous throughout the night, but most importantly, during his entrance. The San Francisco native ended his heartfelt speech with his signature “Yeet” taunt with the fans. Gunther, on the other hand, is once again at the top of the food chain.

He’s now bettered his win/loss record against Uso to 4-1. That being said, the erstwhile Walter is expected to move on to bigger things in the near future. WWE will crown its 2025 King and Queen of the Ring on June 28 at Night of Champions.
The winners will receive a world title shot against the champions of their respective brands at SummerSlam. If Gunther holds on to that belt until the Biggest Party of the Summer, he might have to brace himself for the King of the Ring.
Is Gunther gearing up for a Goldberg showdown?
It has long been rumored that Goldberg will wrestle his WWE retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12 in Atlanta, Georgia. He’s been training for it for a while now through persistent pain in his wrecked body physique. An opponent pitched for The Icon to have his swan song with is none other than Gunther himself.

Since WWE has mostly featured Goldberg in high-profile spots during his previous run with the company, it might want to continue the tradition by letting him have a crack at the world title one last time. These men were involved in a heated confrontation at last year’s Bad Blood PLE.

It had many convinced that the Imperium boss will oppose the former WCW Champion in his last-ever WWE match. Who would forget that Gunther once brazenly claimed that Bill Goldberg was his favorite wrestler in front of Bret Hart on Raw in 2024? The writing has been on the wall, and it’s high time WWE followed up on it.
