The December 8th edition of Monday Night Raw aired live from Kansas City and served as the final red-brand show before John Cena’s last WWE match. The 17-time world champion is just days away from stepping into the ring one final time against Gunther, who earned the opportunity by defeating LA Knight last week on SmackDown to win The Last Is Now Tournament.

And if his final appearance on Raw was any indication, the Austrian powerhouse is heading into Saturday night with one mission: destroy Cena’s legacy. Gunther opened the show, making his entrance to a wave of “We want Cena!” chants.

He allowed the crowd to have their moment before sharply cutting them off, telling them not to get their hopes up as Cena wasn’t in the building, and this was his time. The former 2-time world champion then spoke with a cold confidence, stating that submitting LA Knight was one of the greatest honors of his career.

In just five days, he would have an even bigger one: becoming the last opponent in the legendary 23-year career of John Cena. ‘The Ring General’ acknowledged Cena’s stature: 17 world championships, decades on the road, and the iconic mantra of Hustle, Loyalty, Respect, calling him the greatest sports entertainer of all time.

But on Saturday, Gunther vowed that Cena would stand across the ring from something even greater than the legend himself: as the best professional wrestler of all time. He promised to break Cena’s spirit, bully him, drop him on his head, and squeeze the life out of him until every trace of Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect had been drained from his body.

And when nothing remained, Gunther declared he would make Cena do the one thing he swore he’d never do: give up. For those unfamiliar, Cena has only submitted a handful of times in his entire career, and that too against the likes of Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and Chris Benoit

Moreover, the last time he tapped out was nearly 20 years which makes Gunther’s threat even more chilling. Now the question looms: Will the Austrian powerhouse retire Cena the same way he sent Goldberg packing earlier this year, or will Cena deliver one final masterpiece against one of the most dominant wrestlers of this generation?

WCW legend Sting speaks on John Cena’s WWE retirement in less than a week’s time

Just as John Cena spent more than a decade carrying WWE on his shoulders, Sting served the same role for WCW. Known as ‘The Franchise,’ Steve Borden was one of the pillars of Ted Turner’s wrestling empire and a defining figure in shifting the momentum of the Monday Night Wars in WCW’s favor.

With Cena now less than a week away from retirement, Sting shared his appreciation for the 17-time world champion during a recent interview with Going Ringside. The WWE Hall of Famer wished Cena well as he prepares for his final match against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event, praising Cena’s legacy and expressing his full support.

Kudos to John. He is one of the greatest of all time. I love to see it. I am rooting for him. I am hoping it turns out to be phenomenal. I am sure that it will. I am always rooting for those older guys.

Sting and Cena briefly crossed paths during Sting’s WWE run. On the September 15, 2015 edition of Raw, they teamed up to defeat Seth Rollins and Big Show. Just days later, at Night of Champions, Sting suffered a serious neck injury in a match for the world title against Rollins, an injury that sidelined him until resurfacing years later in AEW.

Sting eventually competed in his own retirement match at AEW Revolution 2024, teaming with Darby Allin to defeat The Young Bucks. He has been signed with Tony Khan’s company since 2020 after leaving WWE, and even after his retirement, he has remained involved.

Most recently, on October 18 at WrestleDream, Sting assisted Allin during his I Quit Match against Jon Moxley, helping fend off Claudio Castagnoli and Pac. As Cena prepares to close the book on his legendary career, receiving praise from a fellow icon like Sting adds yet another layer of emotion to an already historic moment.
