Gunther has always been portrayed as an unstoppable force in the squared circle, similar to Goldberg or Brock Lesnar. However, something distinguishes him from those who came before him. Apart from being a highly skilled technician in the ring, he sometimes seems vulnerable during his matches. While one would think that this makes him look weak, it makes his matches much more compelling and interesting.
Gunther recently had such a showing after the latest episode of SmackDown went off the air. He defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Otis in a dark match. The 32-year-old turned out to be a great dancing partner for the Austrian, given his amateur wrestling background.
The Alpha Academy member had a great showing throughout the match. He even fought out of the Ring General’s devastating sleeper hold. Later, he looked highly charged up after eating some chops and a big boot to the face. The crowd clearly loved every bit of this match.
Towards the end of the match, the Minnesotan threw the champion off the turnbuckle and landed an elbow following his iconic worm dance. Unfortunately, Otis‘ world title dreams were not to be. Gunther kicked out of the elbow and eventually retained his title after landing two power bombs on the challenger.
Regardless, fans were glad to see his World Championship reign going smoothly. What makes the reign even more interesting is that he is not afraid to give title shots to midcarders on the red brand. He even defended his title against Dominik Mysterio on the latest episode of Raw.
Is Gunther being drafted to SmackDown?
WWE made a shocking announcement on the latest episode of SmackDown. The promotion will open a transfer window that will allow superstars to be drafted to the opposing brand without hosting a proper WWE Draft event. This move was likely made due to Raw finding a new home on Netflix from 2025 onwards.
Previous reports have suggested that Netflix has demanded several top stars on Raw once the show moves over to the streaming giant. These names include Roman Reigns, CM Punk, and the WWE Undisputed Champion, Cody Rhodes. If the American Nightmare does return to his previous home of the red brand, that would likely mean Gunther going over to SmackDown.
This would surely provide an interesting shake-up, as champions were not allowed to be picked by the general managers during the 2024 version of the WWE draft. Additionally, this would open up a plethora of new possibilities for the Ring General to face during his reign as World Heavyweight Champion.
