Gunther lost his Intercontinental Title to Sami Zayn after holding it for 666 days at WrestleMania XL. However, his momentum didn’t stop as he racked up seven wins in a row to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. He defeated Damian Priest to win the title at SummerSlam. The Ring General didn’t get any time to relax, however, as on last week’s episode of Raw, Randy Orton challenged him to a rematch.

In the latest episode of Raw, Gunther took things too far when he insulted Randy Orton‘s grandfather and father. The Viper struck at the first chance he got, as The Ring General was distracted by Drew McIntyre. After receiving an RKO, Gunther took to X and sent a stern message to his opponent. The message was simple: the 36-year-old star will see him in the ring on August 31st in Germany.

The rivalry between the two wrestlers began at the King and Queen of the Ring PLE. Gunther got a “lucky” win, as the referee didn’t notice that Orton’s shoulders were up during the count. Many fans believed that the record-breaking champion wasn’t deserving of any further opportunities. He accepted The Viper’s challenge, stating that not getting a clean victory over him had left a stain on his legacy.

Since his return to WWE, the 14-time world champion has been embroiled in a rivalry with The Bloodline. Recently, he appeared at SummerSlam to help his close friend Cody Rhodes in his world title match against Solo Sikoa. Many fans expect him to turn heel soon and start a rivalry with The American Nightmare. Only time will tell whether Orton manages to become a 15-time world champion or not.

Gunther dove in deep explaining the success behind his character

Although Gunther has been a dominant heel since his debut on the main roster, fans have slowly started to resonate with his character. Despite being a heel, The Ring General has faced a variety of opponents and rarely uses cheap tactics to win a match. He discussed the success of his character on a podcast.

While speaking with Booker T on the Hall of Fame podcast, he revealed that, in today’s world, everyone knows it’s sports entertainment. However, Gunther wanted to create the sense that something special was about to happen. He has always made sure that people recognize him as a professional wrestler.

I mean it's 2024, and now everybody knows what we do is scripted, it's sports entertainment. But I always wanted to make it my goal when I walk to the ring that the people's reaction is like, 'Okay, now it's getting real, like now we're in for something special,'

He admitted that it had become increasingly difficult to convince the audience because they knew it was scripted. Gunther revealed that he prefers to stay less active on social media and keep his personal life private. The 36-year-old star’s recent rivalry with Damian Priest proved that he could even hit below the belt to add more spice.
