Losing an important possession is definitely a nightmare, but losing the code to your safe can be far worse. Olympian gymnast Suni Lee experienced what it’s like to feel the sand slipping from your feet.

The athlete who won 3 Olympic medals shared her story of how she composed herself and got her medals back safe and sound, after a weird turnover. While living in Los Angeles after her Tokyo Olympics she kept her all-around silver and uneven bars bronze locked away in a safe.

It wasn’t long after she released her blunder of a recipe she made for her fate. She told Insider that “I forgot the code”. This was definitely a heart-racing moment but in a bad way. All the prizes for her hard work and the spotlight achievement were gone. At least it would have been that way if she didn’t call for the locksmith.

At that moment, the 19-year-old had no way of accessing her medals. Even though Suni Lee is undoubtedly a strong girl, she was no match for the nervous attack of the steel doors at that time. Being in LA limited her options. As she started her move back to native Minnesota, she did what any person would do, “I was freaking out”. “It was so bad,” she said.

Fortunately, after calming down a bit she called people who could actually deal with locked doors. Lee noted that thankfully the locksmith folks “knew who I was”. Within a few minutes, her safe was wide open with all her possession safe and sound.

Since the folks recognized her, they weren’t suspicious of her intent. It was a perfect time, as she got to travel across half of the country with her medals once more. This whole experience may have scarred the Olympian, as she said, “I’m scared now to put them in a safe”. “So I just kinda leave them in a secretive spot now.”

She said that her Paris 2024 approach will be more artistic gymnastics. In an interview with Insider, she commented, “I wanna go to Paris, and I wanna prove to myself that I can be able to do it, because I didn’t think I would be able to do it and I didn’t think I was going to win the Olympics [last time]”. “So this time I just wanna go a little more prepared.”
