“I’m probably already aged out”: Will Simone Biles continue her future in gymnastics?
Simone Biles
Simone Biles is regarded as one of the greatest artistic gymnasts of all time, along with being the most decorated female gymnast in the world. With seven Olympic medals she is also tied for the most medals won by an American gymnast. Biles won five medals at the Rio Olympics, of which four were gold.
Last year however, was hardly a dream for the gymnast with her Tokyo Olympics ending rather in disaster. Biles faced a case of the twists, and prioritising her mental health, she pulled out of all of her events. She did however, walk away with a bronze on the balance beam.
However, Biles has been a great advocate of mental health, not only in gymnastics but for all athletes in high pressure sports. Garnering a lot of praise for her bravery, Biles recently spoke candidly about her future in the sport and how she might not be done just yet. “Technically, if you would ask anybody in the U.S. that looks at an American gymnast, I’m probably already aged out, but I really feel like leading up to Tokyo, I was hitting my prime,” said Simone according to people.com.
“I hit my prime in 2020”: Simone Biles on her career in gymnastics
“Truly, I thought in 2016, at 19 years old, I had peaked. And whenever I came back to the sport, I was like, ‘There’s no way I’m going to get even better than I was because somebody told me that was the best I was going to get.’ “ said Biles.
Simone Biles talked about the need to push out the negative news, and focus on her own talent and capabilities. Biles said that she did not want to have any regrets when she looked back at her career 10 years later. For Biles, her hard work and dedication to the sport was most important, and she would not let anyone take away that joy.
Talking about her mental health struggles, Simone Biles said, “Honestly, last year was a crazy year. But I think pushing mental health to the forefront was a huge thing. I honestly didn’t realize in that moment the impact that it would have.” Biles said that it still blew her mind to know that it wasn’t spoken about before. “So I’m happy that we had that conversation and we can now talk about it.”
