It seems the San Diego Padres just cannot catch any break at the moment. On Wednesday, the team lost another one of their top stars as Ha-Seong Kim agreed to join the Tampa Bay Rays on a 2-year $29 million deal.
Kim joined the Padres after signing a 4-year $28 million deal in 2020. He would quickly establish himself as a valuable player for the team and became a ‘fan favorite’ at the Petco Park.
Despite signing Xander Bogaerts on a massive 11-year $280 million deal in December 2022, Kim remained on the team. He was chosen ahead of the former Boston Red Sox star to play as the shortstop of the team. Bogaerts meanwhile, took up the second base position.
While the South Korean international handled that change well, his offense did go down a bit in 2024 as compared to his 2023 numbers.
In 2024, Kim hit 11 home runs and had 47 RBI with 22 doubles while hitting with .233 average. A year ago in 2023, he had 17 home runs and 60 RBI albeit he played in more games that year. In August 2024, Kim got injured and was ruled out for the season.
At the end of the contract, he declined the mutual option and became a free agent. The Rays have now come in and roped him in. Kim will earn $13 million in 2025, making him the highest-paid player on the team. If he does not opt out of the contract, he will earn $16 million in 2026.

This is the fifth-largest free-agent contract the Rays have ever offered to a player. He though will not be available for selection until May as he continues to recover from a small tear in his right shoulder.
Social media reacts to Ha-Seong Kim joining Rays
Ha-Seong Kim joining the Tampa Bay Rays has left some fans on social media surprised. Many of them were shocked to see him join on this low deal as compared to some other free agent signings this offseason.
Some users on X once again trolled the San Diego Padres for losing another one of their top stars. While making fun of them, one user wrote, “Padres are too broken”.

A few days ago, the Padres lost out on a versatile player Jurickson Profar. He would join the Atlanta Braves on a 3-year $42 million deal. They also lost relief pitcher Tanner Scott as he penned down a 4-year $72 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
On top of all these, the Padres were also left empty-handed regarding Roki Sasaki. The Japanese pitcher was strongly linked to them. In the end, he chose the Dodgers. The Padres are yet to make a big-name signing in the current offseason.
