“Man is about to lose more than he’s trying to get paid” – Jets’ Haason Reddick holding out despite losing money doesn’t make sense to NFL fans

New York Jets star edge-rusher Haason Reddick is usually the one forcing fumbles on his opponents, but this time, he finds himself fumbling the bag. As he continues his holdout from the team, the amount of fines being levied upon him is steadily increasing.
Haason Reddick is seeking a massive contract extension that will pay him around $25 million per year. He is reluctant to budge, and the negotiations are far from reaching an end. The edge-rusher is expected to miss Sunday’s matchup against the Tennessee Titans and will end up forfeiting $800,000.
This will take the quantum of fines up to $8 million as per Adam Schefter. His fine exceeds the yearly salary payable to most edge rushers in the NFL.
Haason Reddick is on his way to forfeit $21.75 million, assuming he continues to hold out for the remainder of the season. Last month, he requested the Jets to trade him, but the team attempted to change his mind and continue negotiating. After all, they bought Reddick in to take their defense to the next level. If they traded him, then they would have given up a draft pick for nothing.
Haason Reddick gets criticized by fans for losing more money than he stands to make
Philadelphia saw this coming, which is why the team settled for a conditional pick in the 2026 draft in exchange for Reddick. The edge rusher is taking a huge gamble by holding out. If he had merely made it to the team’s Week 1 roster, his salary for the year would have been guaranteed.
Fans continue to be baffled at the mounting fines. Reddick risks being traded and there is no guarantee that the new team he lands up on would volunteer to pay him the number he is seeking either. Take a look at some of the responses on X:

He’s going to be boxing Le’Veon Bell this time next year.

That’s a lot of money to lose

This is such a strange decision in a sport with no gaurenteed contracts. Why not just show up and play and get paid?

Jets should just trade him at this point. This is going no where.

Worst agent ever. Will never get that money back ?↕️

Worst agent in the league for letting this happen
— Willy Loman (@Pneuma87) September 15, 2024
Both sides messed this up, but I at least understand the Jets’ strategy at this point.

What is the end goal for Reddick?
On no planet is he going to get the contract he’s looking for PLUS the $8 million or more he will be in the hole for by the time he plays again.
What an idiot

Haason Reddick, do you like money? pic.twitter.com/Vx46oGfhcu

Crazy to lose out on that kind of money.

It is strange that his agent is allowing this to happen. On the one hand, Haason Reddick is holding out because he understands this is likely going to be his last big contract.
So, he is attempting to make all the money he can. But no matter how much he receives, he will be down by $8 million. if not more. depending on how much longer he will hold out.
