The New York Jets appear to be facing some issues regarding the contract of defensive end Haason Reddick after trading him this offseason. He reportedly holding out until those issues are resolved.

Sources close to ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that the linebacker is seeking a new contract and until he receives one, he will not participate in the training camp, starting Tuesday. Reddick is in the final year of his initial deal with the Philadelphia Eagles and is likely to make $14.5 million in the coming season.

However, he is not happy with that contract and wants a new deal from the Jets and that’s why, despite the mandatory fine imposed, he decided to hold out from joining his team in the training camp. According to the collective bargaining agreement, Reddick will be fined a mandatory amount of $50,000 per day he holds out and it can’t be waived.

This isn’t the first time Reddick has taken such a bold step. From the beginning, he has expressed his dissatisfaction with his contract and skipped the entire offseason program including the mandatory minicamp because of the same. Additionally, his demand is also not surprising because his team had made it clear to the Jets before the trade that he wanted a new contract.

With that being said, the only option that the Jets are left with is to add more money to this year’s pact to offer the defensive player a new deal or to sign an extension with him, assuring to keep him beyond the 2024 season.

Jets surprised by Hasson Reddick’s refusal to participate after trade

Based on Reddick’s current deal with the Eagles worth $45 million, he is ranked 19th among the edge rushers, which straightaway contradicts his performance. He posted a total of 50.5 sacks collectively in the last four seasons but despite that, Philly traded him as they knew he was unhappy with his current contract.

As the Jets traded him in, they were reportedly under the impression that the edge rusher “was content to play out the final year of his contract and hit free agency.” But now that he is refusing to participate in any of their workouts, the Jets are utterly shocked.

After last season’s performance of the defense, New York planned to strengthen it even more by adding crucial players such as Reddick. Especially since they need it, better prepare to project quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But considering the recent update, it’s hard to say what comes next for the team.
