New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner made a massive claim on Monday. The 55-year-old expressed that his team does not make a profit, despite the fact that they are valued at $8.2 billion according to Forbes.
The American businessman took part in a Zoom meeting on Monday and reviewed the 2025 season. The Yankees owner told the reporters that he would like to have a low payroll.
As per Spotrac, the Yankees had the third-highest payroll in the league last season. just behind cross-town rivals, the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The LA-based side went on to win the World Series again while their Mets failed to reach the postseason.
The Yankees, on the other hand, suffered ALDS elimination at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays. After navigating through the Boston Red Sox in the best-of-three Wild Card Series, the Bronx Bombers got dominated by the Blue Jays in the best-of-five division series and suffered a 3-1 loss.
During the meeting on a Monday, a reporter would reference Forbes and point out that the Yankees had over $728 million in revenue. After the reporter asked whether it was fair to assume that the Yankees made a profit this year, Steinbrenner would shake his head and express that it was not fair or an accurate statement.
I don’t want to get into it, but that’s not a fair statement or an accurate statement. Everybody wants to talk about revenues. They need to talk about our expenses, including the $100 million dollar expense to the City of New York that we have to pay (for the Yankee Stadium) every February 1, including the Covid year. So it all starts to add up in a hurry.
Hal Steinbrenner told the reporters

The Yankees have been one of the highest spenders in the MLB. Despite their financial muscles, the team has suffered some massive failures in the past few seasons. This year’s ALDS elimination stretched their drought for a World Series title to 16 years.

Hal Steinbrenner points fingers at Yankees players for postseason failure
The New York Yankees got crushed 3-1 in the best-of-five division series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Following the loss, Hal Steinbrenner pointed fingers at the players and blamed them for this loss while defending the front office of the team.

The fans have highly criticized manager Aaron Boone and General Manager Brian Cashman. There have been several questions thrown at them, and their leadership skills.
In the Zoom interview, Steinbrenner backed Boone and expressed that the loss was on the shoulders of the players.
You can’t pin this on Aaron Boone. This Toronto series was on the players. It’s on the players’ shoulders, period. They didn’t hit. We had a couple bad starts. Against the Blue Jays, you can’t do any of that when they were playing as good as they were playing.
Hal Steinbrenner said
Hal Steinbrenner was asked about his evaluation about Aaron Boone as manager after the 2025 season:

"He makes overall good decisions on the field. You can't pin this on Aaron Boone, that's for sure. This Toronto series was on the players' shoulders period" pic.twitter.com/1Z3H2z4Ixm
The Blue Jays outscored the Yankees 34-19 in the 4 games while having 50 hits. They finished the year going 11-6 (regular and postseason combined) against the Yankees.
Steinbrenner and his team are now hoping to bounce back once again. A few days back, the team welcomed back Trent Grisham as the outfielder accepted the $22.05 qualifying offer. The team are reported to be in talks with Cody Bellinger and is trying to re-sign him.
