Hamad Medjedovic did a Novak Djokovic-like split during his tough first-round encounter with sixth Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Qatar Open. While doing so, the Serb suffered a scary hamstring injury and needed immediate support from his medical team.
The incident occurred during the final set when Medjedovic was at 5-4. Medjedovic edged the Greek in the first set but the latter put up a fight to level the scores. In a tightly contested third set, Medjedovic winced in pain when he slipped and his legs split while he was returning a shot. He fell on the court and clasped his right thigh in pain.

In spite of the injury, Medjedovic clinched the third set and eventually the match 7-6(6), 5-7, 7-6(5) to knock out 2023 Australian Open finalist Tsitsipas. With this win, Medjedovic also secured his first victory over the 26-year-old following his defeat to the 2021 French Open finalist in the fourth round in Gstaad last year.
The match was Tsitsipas’ second first-round defeat of the season. He suffered a shocking first-round defeat at the Australian Open to Alex Michelsen in four sets. But he came close to his first title since winning the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters when he reached the quarterfinal of the Rotterdam Open but was no match for Mattia Bellucci.
Fans slam Stefanos Tsitsipas for losing to an injured Hamad Medjedovic
Fans on social media said they are convinced that Stefanos Tsitsipas is finished. The two-time Grand Slam finalist dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in five years after mediocre performances last year.

He also failed to qualify for the 2024 ATP Finals for the first time since 2018. The fans were also in awe of the 21-year-old Hamad Medjedovic for clinching the win in spite of the nasty injury.

Adding insult to injury, he still beat @steftsitsipas on one leg because the Greek wouldn't take advantage of it.

An honest move gone wrong. By the way, If it was Novak they would have said he faked it. Toxic tennis world

Medjedovic is to lock horns with Felix Auger-Aliassime next. The Canadian ace too had to overcome his first-round opponent. He came back from a set down to eliminate Quentin Halys 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2). The upcoming match on Wednesday (February 19) will also be Medjedovic’s first clash with Auger-Aliassime.
Auger-Aliassime has clinched two ATP titles this season, the Adelaide International and the Open Occitanie, but the Serbian youngster is still searching for his career’s first trophy. Medjedovic however, after winning Challenger Oeiras, PT with a straight-set win over Liam Draxl, came close to clinching the Open 13 but fell to Ugo Humbert in straight sets in the final.
