The opening round at the Hamburg Open 2020, saw unseeded Ugo Humbert crashing Daniil Medvedev, Monfils being knocked out by 103rd-ranked Yannick Hanfmann and Roberto Bautista Agut aceing the match over Nikoloz Basilashvili

Daniil Medvedev was crashed 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday by Ugo Humbert in the opening round of the Hamburg Open. Though the top-seeded Russian was a break up in the first set, he was broken twice in a row by the unseeded French who stands 36 places below him at 41st.

Earlier this month, he lost to US Open 2020 titlist Dominic Thiem in the semis at New York. Further, He had been defeated at the first round of the French Open last year and post that this was his only clay-court warm-up ahead of Roland Garros. For the 14 months, the Russian had been playing only on hard courts.

Monfils gives in to Hanfmann

Seed three Gael Monfils was squashed 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets by 103rd-ranked Yannick Hanfmann in an hour and 13 minutes. This victory was 22-year-old wildcard Hanfmann’s first-ever win over a top-10 player.   

German will next face Christian Garin, who quests to bag his third clay victory this year.

Bautista-Agut cruises past Basilashvili

Roberto Bautista-Agut aced a 6-4, 6-3 win against Nikoloz Basilashvili. The fourth seed saved two breakpoints of the four he faced. He further converted four of the nine opportunities to crash the two-time defending champion in an hour and 25 minutes.

He will next battle Dominik Koepfer in the second round.
