WATCH – Hanuma Vihari takes a one-handed catch on English county debut

Hanuma Vihari

Hanuma Vihari made his English county debut today for Warwickshire even as most of his Indian national teammates are occupied with the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 27-year-old last played for Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2019 and was expected to be picked in the auction this year, but it was not to be. Following his snub in the auction for the tournament, the Andhra Pradesh cricketer has taken to county cricket to hone his Test match skills.

Vihari has been a crucial part of the Indian test team for quite some time and it was only an injury that led to him not featuring in India’s last test series against England. In the series before that in Australia, Vihari had played an important role in the series win by helping clinch a draw from the jaws of defeat in the third test thanks to a rearguard along with Ravichandran Ashwin by blocking out deliveries for over four hours.

On the occasion of his county debut, Vihari’s side Warwickshire faced Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. The hosts had opted to bat first but Vihari’s side had pulled things back extremely well by reducing them to 63 for 4. It was then that captain Steven Mullaney and Joe Clarke put on an excellent partnership to ensure the score crossed 100. Just as they seemed to be going well, Vihari helped remove Mullaney with a piece of fielding brilliance.

Mullaney hit a slower delivery from William Rhodes towards the leg-side and Vihari who was standing at mid-wicket leapt, stuck out his hand and completed a superb catch to dismiss the Nottinghamshire captain. A video of the catch was uploaded to Twitter by the official account of the county championship with the caption, “A debut wonder catch for Hanuma Vihari”.

With the bat however, Vihari could not come good as he got out for a 23-ball duck.
