India suffered a humiliating defeat in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 by a margin of 3-1. The Indian team was poor after they had a bright start to the series by winning the first Test in Perth. There were disappointing performances from many players, but the two senior players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, failed to step up in the series.
Both of these players have been struggling in the longest format of the game for quite some time. Hence, questions have been asked about how they were selected in the series despite poor performances for an extended period of time. Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh raised concerns about the selection process in the Indian Cricket Team.
He stated that India needs to end the star culture, and even players like Sharma and Kohli are not bigger than the team. He suggested that if the Indian team needs to carry the senior players on an overseas tour, then they have to play county cricket before they play the series.
Harbhajan Singh raised questions on the tactics of playing two spinners in the Sydney Test
The wicket at the Sydney Cricket Ground was the spiciest wicket of the series and was tailor-made for the pacers. However, India still went with two spinners in the form of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar in the playing XI. Singh has raised questions on the decision that Indian team management had made a blunder to include two spinners in the playing XI just because they can bat.
After the loss in Sydney, India’s hopes of qualifying for the WTC Final have ended. Australia has qualified for the final and will play against South Africa. India has failed to qualify after making it to the final in the last two editions.
