Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian Cricket Team, was absent in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. There was a vacant spot in the opening position and KL Rahul opened the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Both of them stitched together a partnership of 201 runs in the second innings and were instrumental in India’s win. Rahul performed really well in both innings and also scored 77 runs in the second innings.

However, with the return of Sharma for the second Test, there are talks on the batting position of the Indian captain, given that Rahul and Jaiswal have performed really well in the opening spots. Former India off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh does not feel that the Indian captain will bat in the middle order at number six.

I don’t see Rohit coming in at number five or six. Either Rohit will open with Yashasvi Jaiswal, with KL Rahul coming in at number three, or he will bat no later than number three. Number six for Rohit wouldn’t be in best interest of the team. Your top four in batting order should be the four pillars and someone like Rohit at the top would only add greater fillip.

Harbhajan Singh said to India today.

India played a Pink ball practice game against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra, where Rahul and Jaiswal opened the innings for the team and Sharma came in to bat at number four.

His stay at the crease was short as he was dismissed for just three runs. Sharma has amassed 1,037 runs in 16 matches at an average of 54.5 while batting at No. 6 in Test cricket. However, he has opened the innings in Test cricket since 2019.

India beat Australia by 295 runs in the first Test

India registered a 295-runs victory in the first Test match against Australia. Virat Kohli smashed his 81st international century and his 30th Test ton in the second innings of the match. Jasprit Bumrah was the Man of The Match with eight wickets in that game.

Now, with Shubman Gill back in the team after missing out on the first Test due to a thumb fracture, the team looks strong and is set for the Pink ball Test in Adelaide Oval starting on December 6.

Gill has batted at number three since the WTC Final in 2023. So, it remains to be seen where Sharma bats in the lineup. If the Indian captain does open the innings, then Rahul might have to bat at number six yet again.

There are some decisions to make for the team management ahead of the second Test, given that Sharma is not in the best of form.
