5-time PGA Tour winner Harris English will return to competitive golf this week at The RSM Classic. Ahead of this event, the American international recounted his previous competitive appearance and admitted that he was pretty “pissed” by the envelope rule which forced him out of the 2025 Ryder Cup.
The golfer was one of the 6 stars who achieved automatic qualification for the Ryder Cup following a strong showing in recent years. He did not have the best of times at the Bethpage Black Course though.
Captain Keegan Bradley paired him up with Collin Morikawa. The duo struggled against the team of Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood and lost both the foursomes round matchups on Friday and Saturday. The USA ended Saturday 7 points behind the Europeans.
The golfer was supposed to take part on Sunday in the singles matchup. However, Viktor Hovland suffered a neck injury and was forced to withdraw from the action on Sunday. This led to the usage of the envelope rule.
This rule was introduced in 1979 when Europe and the USA went face to face for the first time, instead of the USA taking on Great Britain. As per this rule, each captain must select one name ahead off the tee off.
The player’s name would be sealed in an envelope and only revealed during a time of injury. With Hovland being unable to compete, this rule was used. Harris English found his name on this and was forced to sit out from the action on Sunday. Both teams received half a point.
While appearing on SiriusXM on Wednesday, English made his first public comments regarding this. The 2025 Farmers Insurance Open winner expressed that he was “pissed” by this rule.
Like I’m gearing up, ready to go play a Sunday Singles match at the Ryder Cup. That was one of my two main goals this year was to make the Ryder Cup. To not be awarded that opportunity to play on Sunday, it really sucked.
Harris English said on SiriusXM
"Obviously you're pretty pissed."

Team USA came out firing in the final round on Sunday. They won 6 games and tied 4, and lost just one (Patrick Cantlay vs. Ludvig Aberg) out of the 11 matches that were played on Sunday.
Despite earning 8.5 points, the most in a single round in Ryder Cup history, they lost the tournament with Europe winning 15-13. Harris English, meanwhile, finished the event with a 0-2-1 record and recorded just 0.5 points.
Harris English hints at massive changes to PGA Tour in the 2027 season
With Brian Rolapp now at the helm of the PGA Tour as the CEO, several changes are expected to be made to the tour. Ahead of the final event of the 2025 season, Harris English hinted at this and shared some rumors that he has heard.

Earlier this year, the tour announced the arrival of Rolapp with Commissioner Jay Monahan stepping down from his post at the end of 2026. English, who is the highest-ranked player in the playing field of The RSM Classic, revealed that the tour is planning to implement some changes from the 2027 season.
While speaking with the reporters, the World No.11 claimed that the tour could start the 2027 campaign after the Super Bowl. At the moment, the WM Phoenix Open usually runs on the Sunday when the big football game takes place. This event is also one of the most attended events on the PGA Tour.
The league has been trying to avoid a schedule competition with the NFL. Rolapp has previously worked with the NFL, so a change in the schedule could be on the cards.
English also revealed that the tour could eliminate the 8 signature events in favor of 20-22 events, which are equivalent. The signature events feature a limited playing field of the top-ranked players with a high purse prize.

Only time will tell what kind of changes Rolapp and his team will implement in the future. For now, English would be hoping for a strong showing in his first start in almost 2 months and try to finish of the season on a high.
