If the world wasn’t aware of who Harrison Butker was even after three Super Bowl rings, then it definitely found out about the Kansas City Chiefs placekicker through his controversial comments about gender roles. And even after his social media trial, Butker remains a fan favorite. Well, at least his jerseys are.

It’s more common to witness a decline in merchandise sales for players who find themselves surrounded by controversy. The regular fan prefers staying away from that player, avoiding any flak that may come their way otherwise associating with them.

Harrison Butker’s statement on how women should be more concerned about their families than thinking about which job to choose divided the internet. On one side, some people aggressively condemned the 28-year-old’s words, and on the other, they argued that an American citizen has every right to speak their mind while standing on US soil.

Even a petition was created, seeking Butker’s immediate expulsion from the Kansas City Chiefs. More than 1.7 million people have upvoted for his release.

Meanwhile, another interesting phenomenon occurred. Fanatics, the globally acclaimed online sports merchandise store, saw an increase in Harrison Butker’s jersey sales. The brand’s website revealed that both men and women are actively buying his No. 7 Chiefs jersey.

Why is Harrison Butker’s No. 7 jersey in demand?

It’s slightly hard to predict why there’s been a sudden rise in Butler’s jersey sales. There could be a few reasons that led to people choosing to purchase a kicker’s jersey over a wide receiver or a running back.

It’s hard to find a finisher like Butker, even if he has stirred up worldwide controversy. Yet some don’t want to lose one of the best players to play in his position on the gridiron. It will be a massive loss for the Chiefs.

So perhaps (still a massive hypothesis) fans who want to show solidarity like Chris Jones are buying his jerseys. It appears the silent majority is at work.
