Ruturaj Gaikwad has been one of the most prolific performer with the bat in the recently concluded T20I series vs Zimbabwe. He scored 133 runs at a stunning average of 66.50 and an impeccable strike rate of 160. He was part of four T20Is and has made the No. 3 position his own in the series. Gaikwad batted with responsibility at the No. 3 and also at the No. 4 position.
Virat Kohli has already announced his retirement from T20Is after the win in the T20 World Cup 2024. So, Gaikwad has good chance to stake his claim in the No. 3 position in which Kohli himself batted.
Renowned cricket commentator, Harsha Bhogle, highly praised the Chennai Super Kings captain and stated that he is the next big superstar in Indian Cricket. He also said that if Gaikwad does not find a place in the playing XI, then it will be surprising.
If you came out of nowhere, saw Ruturaj Gaikwad batting in his last 3-4 matches and you say if he doesn't make it to the team, then this Indian team must be from another planet. He's the next superstar.Harsha Bhogle (Via Cricbuzz)
Ruturaj Gaikwad has performed in the IPL and also in the limited opportunities with the Indian Cricket Team
There has been too much competition to find a place in India’s playing XI due to the amount of resources that India have at their disposal. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad could be a perfect candidate to play in the No. 3 position because he has got the calm mind to anchor the innings and also play positively.
Gaikwad has had a phenomenal season in IPL 2024. He amassed 583 runs in 14 games with an average of 53. He finished at No. 2 in the list of batters with the most runs scored in IPL 2024. Gaikwad also took over as the captain of CSK from MS Dhoni. He also led Team India in Asian Games and won the gold medal.
The stalwarts of the likes of Rohit Sharma and Kohli have already retired from the shortest format of the game. The CSK captain could be an ideal replacement to bat at No. 3 and do what Kohli has done all throughout these years in T20I cricket. Cricket fans have to wait and see if Gaikwad does get his chance to bat at No. 3 in the long run under the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir.
