With nearly two decades of experience in coaching, one certainly learns a thing or two. Added to it two Super Bowl appearances and eleven playoff appearances, Mike Tomlin is arguably the second-best head coach in the league, not to mention the only third coach in Pittsburgh’s history.

When such a person offers advice, it becomes invaluable wisdom, which is now bestowed upon quarterback Russell Wilson. While talking about the newly-signed veteran quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach offered much-needed advice to him on what he needs to do to stay ahead in the starting quarterback competition and become the franchise quarterback.

You know, he's simply got to run the offense. We've got to move the ball up and down with fluidity, we've got to play well in situational moments and obviously, we've got to score in the red area.

The nine-time Pro Bowler also evaluated his performances while talking to the media post-game and stated that he was “trying to play in rhythm.” He admitted that while his injury remained a concerning issue, he wasn’t thinking of it consciously. Even though the Steelers couldn’t succeed with a victory, Wilson felt good to get back on the field.

Mike Tomlin addresses Russell Wilson’s inconsistency following preseason loss

After missing the start of the training camp because of his calf injury, it has been tough for the veteran quarterback to get in sync with the first-team offense. That’s why for the second week in a row, the Steelers’ offense failed to put many points on the board, resulting in two losses in the preseason.

Head coach Tomlin has also admitted the inadequate performance by Wilson and stated that it has been difficult for the team to elevate his performance during the preseason.

It's somewhat of an incomplete study because you just don't get a chance to see them operate or us operate or us establish rhythm and personality when you're not winning possession downs.

The Super Bowl-winning coach didn’t blame Saturday’s preseason loss entirely upon Wilson, as he claimed the team failed to protect the quarterback and needs to do better in pass protection, moving forward.
