“He can beat them on their best surfaces” Wimbledon Champion deems Novak Djokovic ‘clearly the best,’ whilst disregarding Federer and Nadal
Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal
The ongoing and nuanced debate of who the greatest of all time in tennis is, remains evergreen. Former Wimbledon champion, Pat Cash has also weighed in on this. When it comes to the men’s singles category, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer lead the bar. The trio have maintained a monopoly over the Grand Slams ever since their break out on the tennis scene.
Currently, Federer and Rafa have 20 Grand Slams a piece. Nole on the other hand, has 17 titles to his name. While such is the case, Novak is the youngest of the trio. Further, the Serb is the only player in history to have won all ATP Masters 1000 titles and complete the career Golden Masters. Djokovic’s age and current form has birthed the idea that he’ll have more opportunities to end up atop in the contest.
Cash doesn’t even think that Federer was the best in his era
In an interview with Ubitennis, Australian tennis legend Pat Cash weighed in on the aforementioned debate.
“If I have to choose the best player, it’s Djokovic, that’s clear. He’s a monster. He can beat them on their best surfaces,” he stated.
Further, Cash added that Federer couldn’t be the greatest since he wasn’t even the best player from his era. Possibly, Pat was referring to Rafa being better than Roger.
Cash said, “A lot of people say Federer is the best player ever, but he’s the second of his time. It’s hard to be the best in history if you’re not in your era?”
While some like Cash seem to have made up their mind regarding the highly publicised discussion, the jury is still out. ‘The Big Three’ will be seen in action at the Australian Open 2021.
