Former India cricketer Ashish Nehra backed out-of-form Virat Kohli. Kohli hasn’t scored a hundred or big scores since November 2019. It’s been a worrying factor not only for Kohli himself, but for everyone related to Indian cricket, keeping in mind, the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup this year. He also failed to score big runs in the recently-concluded IPL where he was dismissed on golden ducks multiple times.

With in-form players like Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, and Ishan Kishan scoring crucial runs, even centuries, Kohli’s place in the T20I side is in danger. Several current and ex-cricketers have criticised Kohli and backed him and one among them is Ashish Nehra.

Nehra backed Kohli and said that you simply cannot ‘drop’ Kohli straightaway and that dropping a player is not a solution.

“There will be discussions even if you’re not a player of Kohli’s caliber. When you are playing, you try to focus on your game and not listen to so-called ‘outside voices’ from people outside the dressing room. It’s important how your teammates, management, and selectors are backing you,” Nehra was quoted as saying.

“But we are talking about a guy like Virat. Yes, it’s not written anywhere that he will keep playing for India even if he doesn’t score runs. But when you have done so much in the past, you will always get extra chances,” Nehra stated.

“Everybody knows his accomplishments and the talent he has. At the age of 33, fitness isn’t a problem for him. Everybody is hopeful that Virat will come good, the quicker the better. Let’s hope we see a different Virat after the West Indies series. If he rests for a month or five odd weeks, it will be helpful for him,” Nehra added.

Ashish Nehra then said that Rohit Sharma also didn’t score runs in T20Is, and both Rohit and Kohli didn’t have a good IPL season but Rohit then scored a half-century runs in the ODI against England, and this added to his confidence.

“There’s so much cricket happening around. And if Virat hasn’t got runs in the T20Is, so didn’t Rohit. Neither they have had a good IPL season. But now the latter scored a fifty in the ODIs, which adds to his confidence,” he said.
