Dominic Thiem got off to a bittersweet start at the Australian Open 2021. He completed a dream-like comeback against Nick Kyrgios only to fail against Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.

Indeed, the weight of the premature exit weighed heavily on the 27-year-old’s shoulders. However, the Austrian ace is now ready to take on another challenge in his calendar.

The reigning US Open champion will enter as the top seed at the Qatar Open 2021. If everything goes as fans expect, Dominic Thiem will face Roger Federer in the finals on 13th March.

First of all, Dominic confessed that the Australian Open loss left minor scars on him. But he has recovered now after spending quality time at home. “A jet-black day brutally ended my Grand-Slam-dream in Melbourne,” Dominic wrote. “I had to analyze a couple of things, after returning home I took a few days off, completely. That helped a lot!”

Additionally, he is excited to play in Doha and then in Dubai but recalled his unsuccessful adventures in the desert. “I don’t have good memories of Doha,” he said. “At my first three starts, highlights have been scarce. At least in 2018, I reached the semi-final.”

Besides, the World No. 4 looks forward to regaining his rhythm and confidence in Doha. Also, he has eyes to repeat what Austria’s Stefan Koubek accomplished in 2003. Although there are lesser strict bubble rules in Doha, Dominic will not get to travel the city. However, much to his delight, he will have his coach Nicholas Massu traveling with him.

After breaking up with long-term coach Gunter Bresnik, Thiem joined hands with Chilean Nicolas Massu in mid-2020. Since then, the Austrian ace has created wonders on the tennis court. Previously, Massu had tested positive for the virus, and so he could not travel to Australia. But now that he is back, Dominic’s game will be complete again.

He confirmed, “I am even happier to see my coach – Nicolas Massu is with me again. And now we will have our first rendezvous at the practice court.”

The season has barely begun, but the Austrian will have much more expectation from himself this year. Time will tell how many goals he achieves in 2021.
