Robert Whittaker vs Israel Adesanya

Former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is looking forward to avenging his last loss in a much-awaited, fans’ permitted and highly significant rematch against the current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. Both the fighters’ last met at UFC 243 in 2019 when the Marvel Stadium in Australia broke the record for the highest attendees’ event in UFC history. With witnesses of at least 57,000 in attendance, Adesanya became the second Africa-born UFC champion as he knocked Whittaker out cold in the second round.

Their rematch now takes place after Whittaker has proved his worth with a very significant 3-fight winning streak, putting on spectacular performances over the likes of Darren Till, Jared Cannonier and Kelvin Gastelum. At UFC 271 taking place in Houston, Texas, USA, it’s only a matter of waiting for the moment if Whittaker will prevail this time or will it be a no different outcome and Adesanya will reign supreme over the middleweight division.

“He [Adesanya] is a good fighter you know, props when they’re due, he’s a great fighter, says Whittaker. “I think he fights really smart and tactically and that’s a good skill set to have. I think that’s an underrated thing especially at the top of the ladder, like doing what you need to do to win, exciting or not or whether for the crowd or not, you know that’s a thing to do for a lot of guys because of you know the whole ego thing.”

“But my overarching feeling of the fight [of Adesanya against Vettori] was I can beat him [Adesanya],” continued Whittaker. “Marvin [Vettori] was throwing strikes and I am a better striker than Marvin, Marvin was taking him down and I think my timing’s better for takedowns than Marvin, I think I can beat him, he just looked beatable, he concluded.

What do you make of Whittaker’s contemporary conclusion of Adesanya based on the latter’s fight that happened last year? Who do you think wins between Whittaker and Adesanya? Either way, it will be good to see the winner but simultaneously hard to see whoever loses too, because they both have been 2 of the most fan-favourite fighters of the sport.
