“He never loses focus,” Father Wolfgang opens up about the determination Dominic Thiem has always put forth
After years of struggle, Dominic Thiem succeeded to claim his maiden Grand Slam title. This feat came about at the U.S Open 2020. Herein, the Austrian vanquished his pal and rival, Alexander Zverev in five-sets.
Further, the 27-year-old reached the final round of the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals for the second consecutive time. Even though he failed to oust Russian machine Daniil Medvedev, Thiem won major brownie points for being the first of the ‘Next Gen’ to break through the top ranks and claim a Grand Slam title.
Wolfgang and Massu’s unwavering faith in Thiem
Thiem is often cited as the hardest working player on the ATP Tour. In an interview with L’Euipe, his father, Wolfgang Thiem, disclosed what Dominic channels in himself to be as resilient as he is.
“It’s a combination of an innate tendency and his consistency. He could always endure very long practices. When he was on the Junior tour, sessions became very hard, high intensity. But he was never losing his focus,” Wolfgang stated.
Further, in an interview with ADN, Thiem’s coach, Nicolas Massu expressed of his belief that his mentee was ready to challenge Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
“It will always be difficult to play against the best in history. But if there is anyone who can compete equally with them it is Dominic. He is very complete: he plays well on all surfaces, he has a great serve, forehand, backhand, he moves well. He has the talent to do things much better than you think,” Massu declared.
