“He trains more and more and better,” Coach gives update on Roger Federer’s comeback for the 2021 season
Roger Federer has been on the sidelines ever since his exhibition match which he played against Rafael Nadal in February. Federer suffered a knee injury which kept him out of the season which resumed in July. The Swiss maestro would want to make a comeback at the earliest as in his absence from tennis, Rafael Nadal equaled his Grandslam tally of 20 titles. Novak Djokovic also remains on course to break Federer’s record of 310 weeks at the top of the rankings.
Roger Federer is back to training on course and is attempting to make a full recovery after a arthroscopic surgery on his knee. Federer is currently undergoing a phase-wise path to full recovery as a part of the rehabilitation program. Ivan Ljubicic, coach of Roger Federer, in a recent interview said that Federer was training extensively according to the program and is on course to make a comeback in the 2021 season.
“He is in the recovery phase, I would say that things are going in the best way. He trains more and more and better, I’m curious to see how much we can push in the coming months. The program we had in mind, to date, has been fully respected. There is a lot of trust,” said Ljubicic on Federer’s comeback. Under the guidance of Ljubicic, Federer has won 3 Grandslam titles since 2017.
We want to have a great Australian Open and then evaluate step by step: Ivan Ljubicic
Ivan Ljubicic said that it was important to evaluate step by step for the 2021 season when asked about their plans for the upcoming season. However, the coach confirmed the Swiss’s comeback at the Australian Open 2021. With Federer turning 39 this August, it is important for his team to plan and select events which will not put too much stress on his body and that he gets adequate rest in between tournaments.
“I know we want to leave as soon as possible, play a great Australian Open and then evaluate step by step. It will be important to go step by step and observe rest periods,” remarked Ljubicic.
In spite of missing almost a year on tour, Roger Federer is still ranked World number 4, thanks to a good season in 2019 where he won 4 titles on tour.
