Deeply saddened by the passing of my former teammate, David Johnson. He was full of life and never gave up on the field. My thoughts are with his friends and family.

Hailing all the way from Karnataka, Johnson made a reputation for himself dishing out a string of impressive performances in the domestic circuit of the sport. Donning the Indian threads too, the Karnataka quick had a lasting impression for his first outing in the international arcade.

After his cricket career, he even went onto mentor and train younger students. His prime time in Karnataka cricket saw him sharing the dressing room with the famed pace battery of Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad and Dodda Ganesh. In fact, in 2009 when Karnataka launched the inaugural edition of the KPL, he plucked himself out of retirement and turned up for the Belagavi Panthers.

Here’s how David Johnson excelled in his cricket career

The 1995-96 Ranji Trophy saw the best of David Johnson, one of those performances being 10 for 152 against Kerala. Gaining popularity through the ranks, Johnson was called into the national side and made his debut against Australia in Test cricket in place of an injured Srinath.

Johnson managed to bag the prized scalp of Michael Slater in very first Test match but his joys in the international arcade were shortlived. He played one more Test against South Africa where he claimed the wickets of Brian McMillan and Herschelle Gibbs but that pretty much proved to be his swansong in the international echelons.

He finished his domestic career with 166 wickets combined across first-class and List A cricket while registering an economy of 3.61 and 4.66 respectively.
