The Sixers star center Joel Embiid is leading his team by example, he is now the new big man in NBA who is dominating the paint area. No one has the answer when Embiid starts making his way deep into the D. The 7’1 star is currently leading the league in scoring at 29.8 points per game as a center if we recall who was the last big man in the center to do so, it was no other than Shaquille O’Neal.

Shaq led the NBA in scoring during the 1994-95 season which was his initial year in the league and when Embiid is achieving the same stats, the comparison debates between have been started in the NBA universe. Although the Sixers star has not yet won an NBA title but the performance, he is putting is directly challenging the legacy of former four-time NBA champ.

Why does Jay Williams believe Shaq wouldn’t be able to guard Sixers’ Joel Embiid?

The debate of who is the better between Shaq and Embiid was recently talked on ESPN show “Keyshawn, JWill & Max”, where Jay Williams gave his honest opinion and why does he consider that Shaq would have found it difficult to defend against Joel Embiid.

Williams said, “Joel Embiid is on his way to be the first center since Shaq, to lead the NBA in scoring. Remember when we talked about ‘what happened to traditional bigs?’ They’ve morphed into Joel Embiid. I think Shaq would have fits trying to guard him. Shaq wouldn’t be able to guard him. I would float him on the perimeter all day long.”

When the co-host of the ESPN show, Max Kellerman and Keyshawn Johnson started to discuss how the Magic’s Shaq was impenetrable because he was so fit and young at that time.

Then Williams added, “I hear what you’re saying. He was an athlete but still, I know scouting reports of when he was a young Shaq and they would just string him out on the perimeter cause he still had a hard time guarding pick and rolls. Joel Embiid don’t guard pick-and-rolls either. I’m saying I would put Joel Embiid in that situation.”

It seems that Williams’ argument does sound right, as Shaq was fully a traditional center which is why he was never a great shooter or ball-handler, but in the case of Joel Embiid the things are totally different as he is a center who would score from any angle of the court. Meanwhile, his dribbling and shooting are both insane which helped him to become the leading scorer in the modern-day NBA. Let’s see does Joel Embiid can win the MVP this season as the stats are already in his favor.
