US Attorney's office investigating NBA star Terry Rozier for his part in illegal betting

Betting has become an integral part of sports after league’s themselves partnered with companies. However, they do not allow players, staff or anyone associated with teams or the league to participate. That also means, they are on the constant lookout for anyone trying to find ways to place bets.

The most recent example is that of former Toronto Raptors star Jontay Porter. He was issued a life ban by the NBA and is currently facing a federal trial to determine the time he will have to spend behind bars. But what that incident showed was that the league along with betting companies are keeping a close eye.

It seems that close eye has led to another investigation, this time, it is Miami Heat star Terry Rozier. The Wall Street Journal revealed the investigation earlier today. They mentioned that this investigation is part of the larger probe that started after the Jontay Porter incident.

Federal prosecutors have been investigating whether veteran NBA player Terry Rozier manipulated his performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme.

Wall Street Journal wrote

As per the publication, the incident stems back to March 2023 when Rozier was part of the Charlotte Hornets. Unusual betting activity on that day led to betting companies notifying the NBA. Now that investigation has been taken upon by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

NBA clears Terry Rozier of any wrongdoing

This is the same attorney’s office that has been instrumental in helping people associated with Jontay Porter to land behind bars. However, the NBA was alerted of this incident at that time and had conducted their own investigation. NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal.

In March 2023, the NBA was alerted to unusual betting activity related to Terry Rozier’s performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans. The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules.

Mike Bass said

This means the league has given the current Miami Heat star a clean chit. With everything surrounding teammate Jimmy Butler, the last thing Pat Riley wants is another negative narrative. However, both Rozier and the league will have to wait until the US Attorney’s office conclude their investigation.

The NBA along with the NFL have forced the likes of ESPN to ban their lead insiders from betting. Sports leagues are wary of anything which could upset betting companies pouring millions into their coffers. At the same time, they have to make it fair for all the fans gambling their hard-earned money.
