Former England captain, Joe Root, has been sensational in the longest format of the game. He scored his 32nd Test hundred on Day 4 of the second Test match between England and West Indies in Nottingham. Root has equaled the likes of Kane Williamson and Steve Smith, in the number of Test centuries scored. All these players have been part of the Fab 4 with Virat Kohli being the fourth member of the group.

Root’s century placed England in the driver’s seat in the second Test as England went on to beat West Indies by a margin of 241 runs. Root has been a consistent run scorer in Test cricket, and after his century, social media fans found out how he could surpass Sachin Tendulkar‘s tally to become the leading run scorer in Test cricket.

Tendulkar has scored 15,921 runs in 200 Test matches. On the other hand, Root stands at 11,940 runs in 142 Test matches. Social media fans found out that if Root continues to score at his current rate of 84 runs per Test match (considering both the innings), he will need another 47 Test matches to surpass the legendary figures of the Master Blaster. As England play quite a number of Test matches in a year (12 Test matches), he will approximately need 4 more years to surpass Tendulkar’s tally.

Joe Root has been phenomenal in Test cricket

Joe Root still has a batting average of 50 after playing 142 Test matches for England. This is a legendary figure and has placed him with the greats of the game. On the other hand, Sachin Tendulkar finished his career by playing 200 Test matches with an average of 53.8. To get anywhere close to his total number of Test runs, Root has to keep on scoring runs consistently for the next 4-5 years, which is quite tough keeping in mind the fluctuations in form and the growing age.

However, Root focuses on just one format now. So, if anybody who can get close to Tendulkar’s Test figures is Root. Root smashed 122 runs off 178 balls in the second innings of the second Test match in Nottingham.
