Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama has once again found himself in the spotlight. The 32-year-old golfer claimed his 11th PGA Tour win last week as he won The Sentry. While looking to make it back-to-back victories on the Tour, he had a moment to forget at the Sony Open.
After playing level par in his first eight holes, Matsuyama arrived at par-5 9th hole, trying to keep things under control. What was not in control of was his golf club.
Following his tee shot, his driver would fly off his grip. It would end up accidentally hitting a fan standing nearby who was watching the event. The golfer would immediately rush towards the spectator and seemingly apologize for his actions.

Fortunately, the fan did not suffer major injuries from this hit. As for Hideki Matsuyama, he seemed to be in a state of shock for a few moments. He though recovered from this and made his second birdie of the day at this hole.
He would eventually finish the round 3-under par as he managed to get just one more birdie in the back nine holes. The Japanese star is tied for 26th spot after completing the first round.
Fans getting hit by golf balls during tournaments is not something uncommon. On several occasions, a spectator has been hit with a golf shot that has gone terribly wrong. Last year at The Masters, Tiger Woods knocked out one fan after his shot went wayward at the Augusta National.
Similarly, Max Homa once almost took the head off a fan at The Players Championship. Luckily, the fan ducked out just in time to avoid a major disaster.
