5. Chennai Super Kings – 246/5 vs Rajasthan Royals, 2010
On a sunny Saturday afternoon in Chepauk, the Chennai crowd was treated to a run-fest as hometown hero Murali Vijay produced an incredible display of power hitting to score a hundred. He was helped by a quick-fire partnership with Albie Morkel who was promoted up the order to capitalize on the fiery start. CSK reached 246/5 in the end.
In reply, Rajasthan Royals (RR) fell short by just 23 runs. Shane Watson was at his blistering best as he kept finding the fence at will but his wicket all but ended the side’s hopes of winning. Naman Ojha carried his bat throughout the 20 overs and ended unbeaten on 94.
4. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 248/3 vs Gujarat Lions, 2016
At the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli delighted the crowd with one of the best partnerships in the history of the tournament. Both batsmen got to quick-fire hundreds as they made merry in their ‘Go Green’ jerseys on a pleasant afternoon. The two contributed to 238 of 248 runs with Chris Gayle and extras contributing to the remaining 10.
In reply, the Gujarat Lions looked clueless as they were shot out for just 104 runs with Chris Jordan taking four wickets and Yuzvendra Chahal returning three.
3. Lucknow Super Giants- 257/5 vs Punjab Kings, 2023
Clueless Punjab Kings (PBKS) bowlers were in despair against four Lucknow Super Kings (LSG) batters who made a mockery of them from the word go when the two teams clashed on Friday (April 28) in Mohali. Kyle Mayers (54 off 24) gave a blazing start to the innings with his half-century, and after him, three more batters displayed absolute carnage with their beastly knocks. Marcus Stoinis was the highest run-scorer (72 off 40), while Nicholas Pooran racked up 45 runs from 19 balls. Before the duo, Ayush Badoni, who batted alongside Mayers notched up a 24-ball 43.
LSG reached the 200-mark with 24 deliveries to spare and were eyeing to breach RCB’s highest IPL total but were restricted to 257/5. PBKS’ Atharva Taide’s 66, Sikandar Raza’s 36 off 22, and a couple of more runs from lower-order batters could take the team to 201, as they eventually fell short of 56 runs.
2. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 263/5 vs Pune Warriors, 2013
The Chinnaswamy Stadium witnessed yet another six-hitting carnival as Chris Gayle produced arguably the best knock in the history of the IPL. The West Indian was at his marauding best as he completely flattened the Pune Warriors bowling attack by depositing one ball after another into the stands. Gayle ended on 175* as AB de Villiers also added to the run-fest with quick-fire innings.
In reply, Pune Warriors’ innings looked like a pale shadow compared to RCB’s. It was only Steve Smith‘s knock that ensured there was some respectability in the side’s total as they reached 133/9, falling short by a whopping 130 runs to RCB’s total and 42 runs to Chris Gayle’s.
1. Sunrisers Hyderabad- 277/3 vs Mumbai Indians, 2024
After 11 years, RCB saw its record get broken by the SRH! There was no Chris Gayle to score 175 runs but the Orange Army broke the record- which looked nearly impossible- with contributions from four batters, three of whom smashed their fifties.
After winning the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya decided to bowl first. SRH did not have a great start but after opener Mayank Agarwal departed to the dugout, the crowd at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium witnessed rain of sixes. Travis Head (62 off 24) and Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) started the onslaught which was continued by Aiden Markram (42* off 28) and Heinrich Klaasen (80* off 34) to post the highest total in the history of IPL.
