Holger Rune will be in action at the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia starting on the 16th of October. However, the Danish player believes he is not yet on the same level as the world’s best, like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Rune rose to fame after winning the BNP Paribas Masters in 2022, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. However, the right-hander hasn’t fully lived up to expectations as he seeks a major breakthrough in Grand Slam events.

Honestly, I deserved to be in the top 7 or 8 for my results between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. But reaching the fourth place in the ranking was not the result of my own work, it was a gift because of the results of the other players above me who did not manage to defend their points from the previous year. At that time, I was not ready, my game was not at the level of the top 4, nor my mentality.

Holger Rune said to Italian media, QuindiciZero

In 2024, Rune hasn’t achieved anything significant. Meanwhile, his peers Alcaraz and Sinner have claimed all four Grand Slam titles and four Masters 1000 events between them.

As a result of their performances, Alcaraz and Sinner are likely to finish in the top two of the ATP rankings by the end of the season. Rune will hope to rediscover his form in Bercy next month, where he made his name in 2022.

Holger Rune shares insights into his improvement under new coaching staff

Holger Rune‘s return to working with Lars Christensen marks an important shift in his career. Christensen, a former ATP Top 50 player, has known the Danish player for many years, having been his childhood coach. Their deep understanding of each other brings a sense of familiarity and trust, which Rune had been missing during his recent coaching changes. Christensen’s disciplined approach has already started to pay off, with Rune noting immediate improvements in his game.

I am happy to work with Lars [Christensen] again, We have known each other for many years and have developed our very own tennis language together. During the past month, I have trained a few times with Lars when I have been in Denmark, and it has, among other things, had a really good effect on my serve.

Holger Rune said in a press release recently

Before reuniting with Christensen, Rune had spent time working with renowned coach Patrick Mouratoglou. However, their partnership faced challenges and ultimately ended this year. Mouratoglou is known for coaching top players, but Rune struggled to find consistency under his guidance. The coaching upheavals, combined with Rune’s injury troubles, left the young Dane frustrated and searching for stability.

Now, back with Christensen, Rune is focusing on simplifying his game. Christensen’s influence is helping Rune strip away unnecessary complexities and return to basics. This shift in approach has helped Rune regain some form, as seen in his recent semi-final runs in Cincinnati and Tokyo, though he still faced setbacks, such as his loss to Taylor Fritz in Shanghai.
