Holger Rune criticized the parody social media accounts that have been spreading fake news about him. Rune is in Cincinnati to chase his second Masters 1000 title of his career, and after his opening-round win, he addressed the growing concerns about the deepfake pictures of the tennis players.
In his first match, the Dane knocked out Roman Safiullin, against whom he now holds a 3-0 head-to-head lead. At the press conference later, Rune censured the fake Instagram screenshots that trick the fans into thinking that they are real ones from the players. But Rune also knows that controlling the internet is never easy.
I like jokes, I like fun, all of this. But sometimes it gets a bit too real in a way—even though it’s fake. That’s when I don’t think it’s necessary. Obviously, it’s tough to control the whole internet!
Last month, he took a dig at a social media account for a fake news involving Veronika Kudermetova‘s revelations about him trying to flirt with her, and how he stopped after she told him she is married and too old for him. Rune decided to respond, warning the fans to be wary of the parody accounts.
I think some posts where it looks too real, even though it’s super fake, those are not nice. It’s a little bit provocative, as well, but I suppose everyone can do what they want.

Also in April this year, Rune’s mother, Aneke Rune, criticized a social media user for sharing a quote about Jannik Sinner that’s attributed to her. As per the fake quote, Aneke called Sinner’s three-month doping ban convenient, hinting about a potential settlement between the Italian ace and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and that Rune was robbed of the Australian Open, which Sinner defended by beating Alexander Zverev.
Holger Rune on Andre Agassi’s mentorship
Holger Rune made headlines when he was spotted working with Andre Agassi before the Citi Open. Though it was a three-day training block, Rune said he had gained a lot of insights while working with the eight-time Grand Slam winner.

We’ve been in touch. We spoke after Toronto, and he also messaged me today. It’s nice! We speak a little bit; he shares his view, I share my view. It’s nice to have someone to speak tennis with who is as into it as I am. I’ve been getting some really good feedback, which is always great.
Holger Rune said at the press conference in Cincinnati
Rune so far has played four Masters 1000 finals, winning only the 2022 Paris Masters by beating Novak Djokovic. This year, he played the Indian Wells final, which he lost to Jack Draper.
Rune withdrew from the Citi Open, and next, he played the Cincinnati Masters. But his run ended in the fourth round after a three-set defeat to Alexei Popyrin.
Holger Rune is chasing his second title of the season
Rune has so far reached two finals this season. In his first final, he lost to Indian Wells, but he was successful in ending the second final in his favor.

He played at the Barcelona Open. After a tough first set, Rune denied the win to five-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz. In Cincinnati, the 22-year-old was a semifinalist last year. He lost to eventual runner-up Frances Tiafoe.
After Cincinnati, the tennis world will shift its focus to the US Open. Rune has played quarterfinals at the French Open and Wimbledon. But at the US Open, he has never advanced beyond the third round, reaching the stage in 2022. Last year, he suffered a first-round exit.
