Holger Rune had a sensational 6-4, 6-4 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Indian Wells. The highlight of this match was an incredible tweener that Rune hit to save a break point, which is being dubbed the shot of the tournament.
After his triumph over the Greek, Rune spoke about his progress as a tennis player over the past two years. In 2023, Rune reached two Masters 1000 finals—at Monte Carlo and Rome. He also attained a new career-high ranking of No. 4 this year.
I have learned my lesson. Things always happen for a reason. I believe every player deserves to be where they are, so I deserve my ranking. Whoever is in their ranking deserves it because it’s about getting results, but also about improving your game and having stability. I think what I have done much better in this tournament so far is my mentality. I have been more consistent. This also translates into better results and a more consistent game. Because I don’t think I have become the worst player of the last two years. In fact, I believe the opposite. I think I have become a more complete player. Mentally, I feel good right now. I feel very calm on the court, and yes, I take it day by day.
Holger Rune told the reporters
Rune won his most recent ATP title in Munich that year as well. In 2024, he reached the finals of one tournament, i.e., the Brisbane International, where he lost to Grigor Dimitrov.
The Dane believes that he is a more complete player now and expressed that mentally he feels good right now and very calm on the court. He further added that even when he is not satisfied with his results, he loves going to the practice court and hitting forehands, backhands, working on his shots, and on his physical condition.
Holger Rune’s 2025 season
Holger Rune started off his 2025 season with the Brisbane International, where he had an opening round defeat to Jiri Lehecka. He then competed in the Australian Open, where he lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.

Rune then played in the Rotterdam Open, where he lost to Pedro Martinez in the Round of 16. He then faced another opening round defeat to Mariano Navone at the Argentina Open. He unfortunately had to retire mid-match in the second round of the Mexican Open due to food poisoning.
Holger Rune at Indian Wells so far
After the Mexican Open, Holger Rune is now playing at Indian Wells, where he has had his best run so far of the season. In the Round of 64 of this tournament, Rune had a straight-set victory over Corentin Moutet.

In the Round of 32, Rune came from a set down to clinch the win against Ugo Humbert. This match also made quite a buzz on social media as it was attended by Hollywood actor Timothee Chalamet, his girlfriend Kylie Jenner, and her sister Kendall Jenner. After the victory, Rune took to X to react to the celebrities attending his match.
I think I served much better than in the previous match, and I also hit my forehand better. Obviously, as I mentioned, I know Stefanos well, so I know how his ball feels. I felt better overall. I felt better in my movement, better in my return, better in my serve, better in my forehand. I think I improved three or four things. Yesterday I had a good day of training, very determined and focusing a lot on details, on shots. That was very important for today’s match.
Holger Rune added
After his victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Rune advanced to the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells. This marks his second quarterfinal in the Californian desert, with his first one being last year, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev.
