Holger Rune will be missing the Australian Open as he is rehabilitating following his Achilles tendon injury. Rune had torn his Achilles tendon during the semifinal match against Ugo Humbert in the Stockholm Open, and he left the court in tears.
Rune said the injury was a lesson for him. In his own words, it was a “slap in the face” because it made him take his talent more seriously. The 22-year-old knows the severity of the career-threatening injury, but it has not demoralized him, as he is confident that upon making his comeback, he can get back to where he was.
Not at all. I have no doubt. I’m sure I’ll get much better. Both because you put things into perspective a bit more, and because you don’t take anything for granted. In any case, I’ve reflected on the fact that I need to appreciate every day.
Holger Rune told Danish channel TV2
Recovering from such an injury can take almost a year, so Rune is expected to miss the majority of the 2026 season. At the Australian Open, the Dane has never progressed beyond the fourth round. Twice he made the last 16: in 2023 and this year, losing the matches to Andrey Rublev and eventual champion Jannik Sinner, respectively.
Rune, in fact, has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event, reaching the stage thrice: at the 2022 French Open, and at the French Open and Wimbledon the following year.
This season, the 2022 Paris Masters champion made two finals. After losing the Indian Wells Masters title to Jack Draper, Rune defeated World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the Barcelona Open final.
Holger Rune gets goosebumps while recalling the injury moment
During that same interview with the Danish channel TV2, Holger Rune revisited the moment he tore his Achilles tendon. Rune said the moment still gives him goosebumps.

I almost get goosebumps when I see it. It was an unpleasant experience. Right when it happened, I heard a pop in my foot. I didn’t know exactly what it was. Afterwards, my foot felt really weird, like my heel was gone. It was like something was broken. I had no connection from my calf to my Achilles tendon down to my heel. And then I thought, “Okay, this is not good”.
Rune found it hard to talk about the injury that defined his 2025 season. Who is to blame for the injury? Rune thinks the hectic tennis calendar is the reason, as tournaments one after the other give not much time to the players to rest and recover.
I also ask myself why this happened. I don’t believe that something like this just happens because of an unfortunate split second. So, you learn to listen to your body. It all got a bit rushed when I got home from Shanghai and had to go to Stockholm a day and a half later.
Holger Rune added
Rune has learned that when he is not feeling good physically, he should give himself at least a week to recharge his batteries instead of signing up for tournaments to chase titles. This year, Rune featured in 21 tournaments, including the Laver Cup. He finished the season with a 36-22 win-loss record.
The former World No.4 has dropped out of the top 10 on the rankings table. He now stands on the 15th spot. Rune is a winner of five singles titles. The last time Rune won multiple titles in a season was in 2022 when he lifted three titles, including the Paris Masters by defeating Novak Djokovic. Since that win, he made the finals of three Masters 1000 events, losing all.
