The courts of the Queen’s Club Championships have come under fire when several players complained of slipping during their matches. Unfortunately, some players even retired midway and injured themselves.

One of these players, seventh-seed Holger Rune, who ended his campaign after losing to unseeded Australian Jordan Thompson in his opening round 4-6, 7-6(7-4), 6-3, started arguing with the umpire, James Keothavong, and even asked for the supervisor when he slipped on the Centre Court on Monday 9 (June 17).

This court is so slippy. Terrible court, what is this? I can’t stand on the court. It’s too wet. Call the supervisor. I fell three times. It’s too wet. You think I’m falling on purpose?

Two players, Dan Evans and Frances Tiafoe, hurt themselves and retired from their respective matches. Former World No.10 Tiafoe, during his first-round match with Rinky Hijikata, fell heavily on his hip in the third set and gave a walkover to the Australian.

Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) spokesperson told Telegraph Sport why the grass courts tend to be more slippery. He said as the grass is a living surface, it reacts to the weather conditions.

Dan Evans heartbroken after injuring his knee at Queen’s Club Championships

The most frustrating part for British No. 3 Dan Evans was the uncertainty over his participation in the Wimbledon Championships and the Paris Olympic Games. The Brit locked horns with America’s Brandon Nakashima in the first round of the Queen’s Club Championships and his campaign there ended with a nasty fall which injured his knee.

Evans did not blame the surface directly but admitted that it would be a tough pill to swallow if he ends up missing the two upcoming big tournaments. At the Olympics, he will join former World No.1 Andy Murray for the doubles matches.

I’m heartbroken at the minute. It’s probably the worst thing you can do on the grass. Your body goes one way, [and your leg goes the other]. We have all seen that sort of motion before. You wince if you’re watching, and you hope it’s not too bad if it’s happening to you.
Dan Evans said after the match

If Evans ends up missing the Olympics, then Murray, who is expected to play in his fifth Olympics, will team up with either Cameron Norrie or Jack Draper. Murray, who secured his first-round win over Alexei Popyrin and is set to face Jordan Thompson, described the injury to Evans as “disappointing.”
