Holger Rune‘s campaign this season ended in complete disappointment. When he was at the Stockholm Open, he tore his Achilles tendon during his semifinal match against eventual runner-up Ugo Humbert and left the court in tears as he was very well aware of the severity of such an injury.

Rune has undergone successful surgery. He has been giving updates on his Instagram about his rehabilitation. He has been working with fitness trainer Marco Panichi (who also trained Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner in the past), and in a video that surfaced on social media, Rune could be seen practicing on the court for the first time since that injury.

Here’s the video:

This concerned the fans as they warned him that rushing to the court could end up exacerbating the conditions. The Achilles tendon injury can take four to six months.

Rune has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals in Grand Slam events. He has yet to reach the last eight of the Australian Open, while at the French Open, he reached the quarterfinals of the French Open twice (in 2022 and 2023).

At Wimbledon, he made the quarterfinals in 2023, while at the US Open, he produced his best when he reached the third round in 2022. Rune has five singles titles to his name, including one Big Title, the 2022 Paris Masters, which he won by defeating Djokovic.

Holger Rune admits he took his talent for granted

Holger Rune, during an interview with Hard Court, blamed the schedule for his injury. He said fatigue was the reason behind his unfortunate injury at this stage of his career. The 22-year-old also admitted that he was not taking his talent seriously, but has now started to after the injury.

I had never had an issue with my ankle before; in fact, I had always been very healthy. I never had problems with inflammations, I always underwent many blood tests, cell analyses, scans, MRIs, etc. Everything was fine concerning my physical condition.

Rune lifted one title this year. He first suffered defeat at the hands of Jack Draper at Indian Wells before he defeated six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz at the Barcelona Open. Rune ended the season with a 36-22 win-loss record.

Daria Saville on Holger Rune’s practice session

Former player Daria Saville underwent Achilles surgery and also had two ACL reconstructions. When she came across Rune’s practice video, she ended up giving a warning to the Dane.

I never doubted my love for tennis, but I took my talent for granted. I was sometimes too easy on things, and now I feel the longing, and also look back and see all the stuff I could have and probably should have done differently. Not just practice, because that is where my passion is, but all of the things around it- what you eat, etc.

Holger Rune added

In Grand Slam events, the Dane couldn’t progress beyond the fourth round this year. He reached the last 16 of the Australian Open and French Open. He suffered a first-round exit at Wimbledon, while at the US Open, he lost in the second round.

As someone who’s been through two ACL recos and an Achiless surgery, if I’d pushed this hard this early in rehab (return to play), I would’ve gone insane. I do think Holger is built different tho but idk… I know rehab burnout too well.
