Holger Rune‘s quest for the Acapulco title ended on Wednesday (February 26). Following his win over Roberto Carballes Baena, the 21-year-old abruptly ended his second-round clash with Brandon Nakashima right after losing three games of the first set.

This happened after Rune overcame an illness that forced him to pull out of the Rio Open. The reason behind him handing the walkover to Nakashima was food poisoning. Fourth seed in the tournament, Rune later took to social media to reveal the reason behind his sudden mid-match retirement.

Furious and so sad at the same time. Had a food poisoning and was unable to play today. One of my favorite places is Mexico and I love this tournament @AbiertoTelcel. Absolutely not the way I wanted it to end.

Rune didn’t have a strong run in the Golden Swing as before withdrawing from the Rio Open, he suffered a straight-set defeat to Mariano Navone in his opening round of the Argentina Open. He has now a week to recover before kick-starting his campaign at the ATP 1000 Indian Wells. The World No. 13 hasn’t yet won a title since the ATP 250 event in Munich in 2023.

Stomach bug forces Casper Ruud to withdraw from Mexican Open

Holger Rune wasn’t the only player to succumb to stomach illness. Last year’s Mexican Open runner-up and second seed Casper Ruud too was forced to call off his round of 16 clash against Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez due to the effects of a stomach bug.

I’m so sorry I had to pull out tonight. I was hoping to overcome this stomach illness that showed up yesterday and tried everything I could to be able to play tonight, until the very last moment. Hoping to come back stronger in a couple of days and come back here to Mexico next year. Thanks for now, Acapulco!

Ruud, Rune, and the other top seven seeds have ended their campaigns in the Mexican Open. Third seed Tommy Paul too faced the same fate as Ruud and Rune as he withdrew even before facing compatriot Marcos Giron in the last 16 because of the same issue.

First seed Alexander Zverev, on the other hand, fell to 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals runner-up Learner Tien in the second round. Fifth seed Ben Shelton crashed out of the tournament after defeat to David Goffin, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina ended seventh seed Frances Tiafoe‘s campaign.
